Getting the job done

Wooden floor fitter
Wychwood have a good reputation for fitting all types of flooring.  But not all individuals and companies offer the same level of professionalism.  Below you can find advice and guidance about looking for a professional to fit your wooden flooring.

Finding a fitter
Finding a reputable wooden floor fitter isn't too hard.  Here are a few places you can try.

  • Ask the retailer for a recommendation, they will either fit the flooring themselves or have a few trusted contractors.
  • Look in the Yellow Pages.  Pick a company that only fits flooring.
  • Ask friends and family for a recommendation.
  • There are plenty of tradesmen websites where you can read reviews about a person/companies ability to do a job to the standard you want.

Get an estimate
Whether you have purchased your wooden flooring, or the fitter will provide you with everything needed, they will need to visit your home first to provide you with an estimate of time and costs.

This estimate will be based on the sub-floor being in good repair.  If there are any problems that need to be fixed the fee will increase.

Saving time
To save yourself and your fitter time, point out when the estimate is being done, any rooms that have been knocked together, chimney hearths and loose floor boards.

Hidden features, such as sunken or raised hearths, or floors at slightly different levels will take more time to lay over as the fitter will have to create an even surface first.

Preparation
Most fitters will expect you to get your room ready.  Remove all old floor coverings and furniture, check the floorboards are fixed.

Knock all nails into the floor, give it a clean and make sure it is completely dry before the new floors are fitted.

If there is anything else you need to do prior to the floors being fitted, such as getting to central heating pipes, laying cables for telephones etc, now is the time to do it.  Once your flooring is in place it may be difficult to remove it at a future date just to get to a pipe or cable.

To get the best finish, remove skirting boards and put them back after the floor has been laid.
